Hello Chemists
I am the Gentleman Scientist and I have been asked to write a few words of a subject of my choice! Well, after looking through the 600 or so posts this blog has to offer, I have decided that I shall probe a little deeper into the area of organics, most notably, the reaction involving inorganic atoms.
And so we move swiftly onto Phosphorus. This simple atom holds so much in this field, its ability to facilitate reaction is seen clearest in the Wittig reaction. The Wittig reaction forms a carbon-carbon double bond rather effortlessly!
This reaction forms the rather wonderful alkene product with two R-groups, leading to further reaction paths. A great tool for the organic chemist, join this with the mild reaction conditions and we see how powerful this reaction really is.
So study the reaction above, you may notice we get but the one product! Although this is not shown, we do get a mixture of Z-E products. If we wish to produce the E product in a higher percentage, a simple change in reagents can produce the desired product allowing you to tailor your end product!
I hope this short introduction has shown you the power of some of these reactions, with inorganic atom in your molecule, you can forge a carbon-carbon bond with what ever you like on either end!
Tap Drawer!
The Gentleman Scientist will be ghost writing several post on advanced organic chemistry over the next few weeks!
Whoa! Wittig Reaction! :)
wahhhh :/
